What is an ETF? Exchange Traded Fund

ETFs offer greater diversity than simply buying individual stocks because they pool together different assets, such as stocks, bonds and commodities. Financial professionals can help investors reduce the risk in their portfolios and maximize their potential returns through diversifying their investments. Mutual funds, particularly those that are actively managed, often experience higher levels of trading activity, leading to potential capital gains. Additionally, when mutual fund investors decide to sell their shares, the fund managers may need to liquidate securities to facilitate these redemptions, potentially generating further capital gains.

Our International Access ETFs deliver targeted exposures to Asia, Europe and Latin America, as well as actively managed strategies focused on high-potential emerging market segments. The price of most ETFs closely reflects the value of the assets they hold. This is in contrast to some products like investment trusts for example – where the trust’s shares frequently trade at a premium or a discount to their assets, which means additional risk. ETFs are considered different to mutual funds, which normally are not traded on an exchange, and which trade only once per day after the markets close. First established over 30 years ago, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have become a popular investment choice.

Which is better: ETFs or index funds?

ETF providers also make money from transaction costs related to buying and selling assets within the ETF. When you invest in ETFs, you’re essentially spreading your money across various assets, which can reduce risk compared to investing in just one company or asset. For example, if one stock in the ETF performs poorly, other stocks in the fund might perform better, helping to balance out the overall performance. Institutional Separate Accounts and Separately Managed Accounts are offered by affiliated investment advisers, which provide investment advisory services and do not sell securities. These firms, like Invesco Distributors, Inc., are indirect, wholly owned subsidiaries of Invesco Ltd. Additionally, ETFs provide the advantage of liquidity, allowing investors to buy and sell shares at their discretion throughout the trading day.

  • As there is often more than one ETF on an index, they are easy to compare.
  • Person” includes, but is not limited to, any natural person resident in the U.S. and any partnership or corporation organized or incorporated under the laws of the U.S.
  • Because of the way they’re structured, ETPs might reduce capital gains distributions to investors and can be more tax efficient than similarly invested mutual funds.
  • For more on asset class-specific risks, review the appropriate investment product information.
  • APs purchase and redeem shares directly with the ETF in the primary market in large blocks of shares called creation units.

Portfolio Risks

The tax treatment of ETPs varies depending on the nature of the product, and not all ETPs offer the same tax efficiencies. Leveraged and inverse ETPs, precious metal and other commodity ETPs, and currency ETPs, for example, can create tax liabilities. Certain types of ETFs also might subject investors to different tax issues as well. Before making any investment, know your financial objectives and understand the risks of the exact type of product you’re considering. An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is a basket of securities you can trade through a brokerage firm on a stock exchange.

Understand the tax implications of any investment product you’re considering, and consult a tax professional if you’re uncertain about how you might be affected. For more information about the tax treatment of a particular ETP, make sure to read the prospectus or pricing supplement. Consult a tax professional if you need clarification of tax implications before making an investment. While similar to the creation and redemption mechanism for other ETPs, ETNs don’t use APs.
